SIXTEEN

Ididn’t want to be around Cernunnos any longer. I didn’t want to be around anybody. The story he’d told me had been too much. I expected it to be about me. I’d always thought he was keeping his cards close to his vest when it came to what he knew about my past. Obviously, that wasn’t true. He didn’t know anything. He was guessing.

That wasn’t what I wanted.

I left him sitting in his chair. The cake was gone, but he kept sticking his fingers inside to lick the leftover icing. Just being around him made me want to throttle him.

I would find my own way home.

The stairs going down were dark, and I almost tripped twice. I heard him call out to me, asking where I was going. I didn’t respond. I was done with him. I wanted to be done with him for good but that seemed unlikely, so I would just have to be done with him for now.

I was so lost in my own little world that I didn’t notice the two men standing in the middle of the main floor. They were dark silhouettes, nothing more. I recognized them with my heart instead of my eyes.

I never cried. Like … ever. Even when I’d broken my arm a year after arriving in Detroit, I hadn’t cried. Tears threatened to bubble up now, though.

I threw myself at Cormack without realizing I was going to do it. He caught me, his hand stroking over my hair. He had no idea what was wrong, but he didn’t care. He was a man who liked to make sure his children were okay. And even though I fought being labeled one of those children, I was glad for his presence now.

“What’s wrong?” he asked in a gentle voice as he caressed the back of my head. “What did he do to you?”

“I’m going to kick his ass,” Redmond announced. As far as I could tell, it was just the two of them and not the others. They were enough, though. “Where is he?”

“I don’t think violence is the answer,” Cernunnos chided as he appeared on the stairs behind me. I jolted at the sound of his voice, and Cormack held me tighter. “She’ll be fine.”

“I knew letting her come here with you was a mistake,” Cormack hissed. “What is the matter with you? What did you say to her?”

“I don’t even care what you said to her,” Redmond challenged. “I’m going to kick your ass regardless.”

“Sit down.” Cernunnos waved his hand, and the brown chair from a floor above appeared behind Redmond, who was then magically thrown back into the chair before he could huff out a response. “Shut up,” the god ordered when Redmond opened his mouth to let loose what I was certain would amount to a string of vile curses.

“What did you show her?” Cormack demanded. “What have you been hiding from her this entire time?”

I pulled back far enough to wipe the tears from my eyes. Cormack wordlessly provided me with a handkerchief and moved his hand to my back.
